Where do videogame characters go when they die?

super-mario-ghostCharles Martinet, the voice actor who’s provided the voice for Mario of Super Mario Bros fame, chatted with Jason Hill of The Age‘s ‘Screen Play’ blog about his life as a CG plumber (from Brooklyn!).  This bit almost made me cry (only slight exaggeration), but also shocked me with its profundity:

I imagine you do get a script but really have to spontaneously answer a lot of questions. What are some of the tricky questions you’ve been asked by kids over the years?

Yeah. It’s so funny. Little boys in particular. They can really say things that are out there. One little boy said: “Mario, when you die, do you see God?” I just said: “Well, when I die, I go ‘waaaaaa’ and then I pusha Start, and I play again”. How do you answer that?

The way you just did, Charles. The way you just did.

There is a chapter in the WoW book “What Makes World of Warcraft a World?: A Note on Death and Dying”, which I haven’t read but might be interesting in regards to chacter death. I can get you a copy of it if you want.
